Ouch! There are a lot of fantastic mobile phone deals around at the moment – this isn’t one of them!
Piotr Staniaszek, an oilfield worker in remote Western Canada, learned the $85,000 way that he couldn’t use his unlimited cell phone web browsing hooked up to a computer to download data and movies.
Believing that Bell Canada’s deals on mobile phones with unlimited web access allowed him to connect his phone to a computer, modem-style, the 22-year-old Calgary resident received the shock of his life when opening his first bill. It turned out that Bell had charged him for internet downloads on a per-kilobyte basis. What stunned Staniaszek, as he revealed on CBC News, was that “they’ve cut my phone off for being like 100 dollars over. Here, I'm 85,000 dollars over and nobody bothered to give me a call and tell me what was going on.”
Despite an offer from Bell to reduce the bill to $US3243 as “a measure of goodwill”, Staniaszek insists that he will try and fight to dispute the amount.
In his son’s defence, Staniaszek’s father has come out and said that Piotr is “working in the field sometimes, alone, in the shack. What to do? Drink vodka or go on the internet?”
With 20/20 hindsight, you’d wish he’s spent some of that time reading the fine print of his contract!
Receiving the first bill for your mobile phone needn’t be so taxing, however. With an abundance of great offers on mobile phones online, you can rest assured that your dream purchase won’t end up causing you nightmares after the first phone bill. Regardless of your handset, whether it’s anything from a sturdy and original 5110 from Nokia phones or the latest in the Nseries range, the new slimline Nokia N96 smartphone, you’ll get the best deal online.
As for Staniaszek – well, one can only hope that he tries again with surfing the internet and stays clear of the vodka!
